This is part 2 in the three part “being a locum vet” series.
Julie South outlines 11 considerations you need to take into account if you’re thinking of being a locum vet / vet locum (including vet nurse locum and vet tech locum).
Is being a veterinary locum right for you?
If you’re thinking of chucking in your day job to pick up the Instagram-glamorous lifestyle of the footloose and fancy free, high rolling life of the locum, then this episode is for you!
Not everyone is cut out to be a locum.
Moving from pillar to post doesn’t suit everyone’s personality.

11 Locum Lifestyle factors to consider
Here are 11 considerations I recommend you take into account before you rush to hand in your resignation:
- unpredictability
- admin
- follow up and follow through
- have lots of referees
- >3 years post grad experience
- you need to be a people person
- travel & nights away
- you need to be able to say “no”
- money in the bank – Rainy Day Funds
- nowhere to call home
- test drive a new job
