Understanding Resilience: Bouncing Forward

Resilience is a crucial trait that allows us to work our way through (from one side to the other) of life’s challenges.  The only way out is through and when you have resilience, you can do this with strength and determination.

As Julie South emphasises, resilience is not about ignoring pain but about processing it and developing mental fortitude. Rather than dwelling on setbacks, resilient individuals view them as valuable lessons.

Resilience enables us to understand that life happens with us, not to us. When we adopt this mindset, we can bounce forward in life, taking on the temporary nature of challenging times and using setbacks as opportunities for growth (00:05 – 06:42).

Low Resilience Quotient Attitudes

People who have low resilience quotients are exceptionally well developed in the following ten things / attitudes / approaches to life:

  1. Hanging on to guilt and regret
  2. Being unwilling to face their fears
  3. A tendency to blame other people or things for their problems
  4. Thinking, feeling and behaving negatively.
  5. Not taking responsibility for their actions
  6. Inability or refusal to make tough decisions or take action – they procrastinate or bury their heads in the sand.
  7. Unwilling to acknowledge their mistakes
  8. Not learning from what’s happened
  9. They focusing on things they can’t control or can’t take action on just now
  10. And they think about the future in negative terms.

Cultivating a Positive Mindset

The power of having a resilient response lies in our ability to seek out positive experiences and consciously look for things that bring us joy on the inside.

While we can’t control external events, we have full control over our response to them.

Julie advises us to focus on the positive aspects of our lives every day as a countermeasure against negativity. When we do this, we strengthen our resilience, grit, and fortitude.

It’s important to remember that resilience is an ongoing process, and actively seeking out joy internally is a powerful tool in building and maintaining it (06:45 – 12:30).

Evaluating Career Choices

Lately Julie has been answering a few jobseeker questions about what they can do when they think they’ve made the wrong career decision to accept a new job.   These veterinarians and nurses haven’t used VetStaff’s services (they likely wouldn’t be asking this question if that was so because of VetStaff’s robust interviewing process).

Engage in open and honest conversations with relevant managers regarding your decision to stay or leave. This ensures transparency and minimises potential misunderstandings in the process (19:16 – 25:55).

Developing a positive mindset by consciously seeking out joy is a powerful tool in strengthening our Resilience Quotient.
